How much money do I need to travel around Australia for one month and what places good to visit?

How much money do I need to travel around Australia for one month?
Considering I might be living in a relative’s place for maybe 3 days and the rest wandering around, living in budget hotels (with minimal belongings but not backpacking either)

Do suggest some great locations and cities to visit for experiencing their culture, language and scenery (Ayers Rock, Great Barrier Reef). I don’t really care for those overrated commercialised touristy places (eg Gold Coast, Sea world etc)

Also, what is good advice for travelling within Australia by domestic flights to get cheapest fare and shortest distance?

A book/website recommendation on how to plan an Australian tour will be appreciated.

I live in the US and there is a 14 hour time difference between here and there. Is there anything I need to know about Australia before I go? I plan on traveling for my first time to Australia soon. I plan on staying in Bendigo for a couple of days because I have a friend there. Then I would like to go to Sydney for the Opera house, Australia Zoo, Uluru rock and Kangaroo Island. I need to find some cheap ways to travel.
