Why is it that in Australia tumble-dryer sheets are not commonly used?

I keep on reading presumably american people going on about tumble-dryer sheets. They do have them in Australia and I have used them. I don’t see the difference in performance as compared to liquid fabric softener. Can someone please shed some light?
